The internet isn’t happy with our way of buying drinks…

TWO DAYS AGO, a 17-year-old American student posted on Reddit asking what he need to know to move to Ireland.

Yesterday, an Irish redditor responded with this post describing the ’rounds system’ in Irish pubs. “This is very important, very,” he wrote. Then gave a set of 10 rules of the round.

The post went viral – so far it’s attracted 500 follow-up comments, been shared on Facebook 600 times, and tweeted dozens more. It’s a little complicated in full, but basically boils down to:

You’ll notice immediately that people will offer to get you a drink when you are out with them [...] They are doing it under the implicit agreement that you will buy the next drink for them [...] You will be despised if you make no effort to get your own round in.

Strangely, many people were puzzled by this clear and cogent approach, and had their say in the comments. Here are some of the best:

"It makes sense if you consider it a scheme dreamed up by barkeeps to maximize profits. You can't just go in for a couple beers, you got to buy 10 and then wait for 10 to be bought for you. Now you are completely wasted and passed out on the sidewalk and the barkeep has all your money, and everyone else's, and everyone is poor." (Alex E. Proimos via Flickr)

"For someone who may find themselves in such a situation and who has not had the fortune to read the "rules" as you've posted, especially being from an area that does not follow such a custom, it would be nice to inform them well before reaching scab status as to what the expectations are. Most people have no issues with adjusting to cultural paradigms provided they are informed as to what they are." (BiblioArchives/LibraryArchives via Flickr)

  • Rules of the round: the internet is puzzled

"But the biggest problem I see is wanting a drink that isn't of the same price as everyone else. Why should I go in on a round with people when I only want to drink whisky all night and they're all having beers? Why can't people just buy their own goddamn drinks." (sanchom via Flickr)

And the response from an Irish person: "Because drinking at the pub is mostly a social activity in Ireland. If you want to sip vintage Armagnac with your pinky cocked to the side at the base of your lead-crystal glass, you can do that at home with the boring auld shites you have for friends ;o)" (flickr4jazz via Flickr)
