When I travel or work abroad as I frequently do, I am proud to be Irish. Proud that I am university educated, unlike so many irish before me, proud that I can hold my own with professionals working in the same field as myself, knowing I am not being viewed as the thick Paddy. Proud and confident enough to not have to spend every night in dingy Irish pubs surrounded by yobs and Mammy’s boys eating bags of Tayto….

Totally cosy and self referential but am I the only one that Anne & Barry pic made my mouth water! I remember it like it was yesterday! Damn cakes! That is the “cosy referential crap” that binds us together in our common experiences and essentially makes us Irish. We are not defined by GDP…are we?

Don’t people ever tire of this cosy self-referential crap? This stuff gives me a far greater urge to emigrate than whatever misery gets imposed by Frankfurt and their collaborators in the Dáil. I remember the Irish Times coming out with a feature on all the great things about being Irish in the days following the Troika bailout. It’s as if the people on this island had nothing in common apart from stupid cultural ephemera from their childhood that allows them to go halfway fetal whenever they’re feeling exposed to the harsh glare of the rest of the world.
