WOULD YOU QUEUE for a new iPhone? Would you shell out hundreds of euro for the latest gadget?
If the answer is yes, you’re not alone. There were people planted in front of their computer screens at midnight ready to order the iPhone 5, and there were early risers outside phone shops around the country with their money in their sweaty fists…

900euro what the hell anyone that pays that your a phone is insane
Didn’t even lookup be honest as I have a great deal on AT&T with a grandfathered plan and get a decent 28% discount on monthly service.
I know the Verizon CDMA phones have the SIM unlocked and that’s not changing cos of an FCC ruling that affects them. I read the unlocked phones here were starting at $649 for the 16GB.
Yesterday there were posts about the country overspending by 21 billion. Another about Arthur’s Day and now this about people queueing to spend ?900 on a phone. Are these the people who are also queueing up to leave the country at the rate of 1 a minute. Something not quite right going on here.
As one of those ‘misguided fools’ queuing on Grafton Street, I have to say I’m pretty shocked at the level vitriol on this site today towards those of us that choose to spend our own money in our own way. Seems a bit like the troll version of ‘keying’ someone’s new car because you don’t have one yourself. I have been an Apple ‘fanboy’ since before the launch of the Mac in 1984 – we used to be called customers, I guess it’s part of the progress social media has brought. Anyway, I’m enjoying my new purchase, despite the abuse received while queuing from revellers heading home from that historic and long-standing cultural event called Arthur’s Day, but then then I’m just a victim of marketing, a misguided fool…..
I waited in line to get the iphone 5 last week here in fort lauderdale and was lucky to get one. i was home with the phone at 9.30 am and returned it by 11.20 am. It was more of the same just a little better and longer. I was due an upgrade so decided I’d get one but i have grown tired of the iphone so got the Samsung S3 instead and i love it especially the bigger screen.
Just to add to what Miriam said, a lot of iPhone users sell their previous models before buying the latest model. It works out that there’s no cost involved at all if you’re a bill paying customer. Expensive if you’re a prepaying one! I do think that Apple have lost their way a bit since Steve Jobs died. The upgrades are coming too soon with not enough change or half finished Beta stage apps like Maps that Jobs would never have allowed to see the light of day until it was perfect. They have been slow to upgrade the camera over the years which always annoyed me. I still have to make up my mind. I have the iPhone 4 and didn’t bother about the 4s. Standards def have slipped……
You can buy them on major Irish advertising sites today if you’re mad enough to fork out above RRP, saw an add for 1K euro for 16gb version :-) I would not buy it for RRP in fairness, not bad phone, but sooooooo boring now same looks and interface couple years in a row now. If I never had iPhone then maybe yes… look at Lumia 920 and Galaxy Note 2. 2 hottest phones of 4th quarter of 2012, not iPhone 5.
I am very much enthusiastic about iPhone… That said some of the full grown men throwing tantrums (they are all men for some reason, no women are in phone stores or calling customer service, beating their fists on the floor wailing)

One of the least attractive things about the Apple/Mac product range is the apparent need for its adherents to join a cult and try to talk people into buying them.
I don’t quite understand why Samsung is now going down the same route.

Three store refused to sell me a phone and claimed they weren’t selling upgrades just new customers. They said all networks would be the same. I learnt otherwise and a phone call and some complaining later and I will have mine Monday. For those complaining about the cost the prepay price is crazy and i would never consider it but the way I do it is I bought my first one then each upgrade traded in my old against the new so the upgrade is free and I am on a basic bill pay plan. This time the phone was 150 and the trade in value of my iPhone 4 was 170 so I was in credit.
I got one, lightly seasoned and battered it, grilled until golden brown, served it up with crispy noodles and a chianti, sitting on a trolley at Beaumont right now.
I really want one! We are all totally addicted to Apple in our house, (I realise many will find that sad but live and let live, right?) However, I’m not the queuing type so I’ll just wait till my birthday and drop SEVERAL heavy hints and hope to receive a nice little box on the day. Only 7 weeks to go!
