It’s all about market penetration. It is more affordable than the 3 rd generation iPad also it will be easier to carry around. I personally wouldn’t get one because I prefer the larger screen. But for some that doesn’t have one its ideal.

Jez..you would need to be loaded to keep buying the stuff Apple want to buy every few months…I think i’ll opt out..happy enough with what I have…I dont need re-inventions of the same devices I already have..

Apple aren’t exactly bringing out amazing new products….

They are not planning on phasing out the regular size , did they phase out iPod when the mini came along ? They are simply making sure they have a tablet at a price that’s more affordable

With children using iPads and mobile devices as educational tools in classrooms for smaller hands iPads minis makes perfect sense.

It’s just one of those “nuts n’ gum, together at last” products. Insane that the entry-level model will be cheaper than the entry-level iPod touch. Blurring their product lines, designing products by compromise and playing catch-up with the competition, all things that are not Apple’s strengths. It’ll be successful in the short-term but in the long-term it’s back to the 1990s Apple logic.

Meh they are filling a gap in their product range.

Ill give it 4 weeks after launch before they start suing Asus/Google because of the Nexus 7.
They probably think Asus copied them.

Jobs rubbished the 7″ tablet only 2 years ago. Apple were wrong, as the Nexus et al have proven. They now have their 7 incher and know that the spare cash, still retained by Apple fans, will be rescued by Christmas.

Giving apple a wide berth… planning on buying a Samsung 10.1 tablet on Friday .Just as good as an ipad but alot cheaper. Ok beans on toast for the next week for me so ….

apple sell products on innovations they make, this is a true fact for mac books, unlike windows they work and give no hassle. but as for iphones and ipads, im sorry apple fans but they have simply run out of ideas! they sold the iphone 4 on the innovation of the retina display, when they outdone by Samsung with there screen technology they started selling there new flagship phone on the size of the screen, but HTC and Samsung have been doing it long before them. Even when apple changed the connection type making all the older docking stations obsolete nearly apple fans still stood by them, that’s just silly. Apple is a US stock market master at making money, and they will sell you anything once you buy it. And don’t forgot apple fans, its still made in China, like all other electronic crap!

Supa Kawaii! Smaller versions of big things. iPad mini, mini Coca-Cola cans… those 8 packs of mini cereals… Want. Why? umm.. Because I prefer kittens to cats.

If people are confused, they’re idiots. It’s smaller to face off competition. It’s also more convenient if you’re into books etc.

I don’t really understand all the griping. I don’t think any of us really believe anyone is going to buy an iPad, iPad mini, iPhone and ipod touch… This is an addition to a fairly small line of products. Other companies make similar products and Apple wanting to enter this niche isn’t particularly surprising (despite jobs’ assertions that people didn’t want this size of device).

As a developer, my main complaint is that it adds yet another screen to create content for; Apple are fast destroying the main selling point of the iPad as a platform by fragmenting the line into different screen sizes and resolutions. That said, my mother likes my iPad because it’s easy to use but the screen is too big for her, so who knows? Maybe this is the perfect thing for her.

Hate on the company all you want, but there’s no reason at all to hate on a new addition to the line.

I think it is quite a smart move, increasing their potential capture range of consumers, while potentially allowing them to drive up the spec and price of their future gen of the iPad.
I believe it is also designed to snag the massive potential in the education market, the price point being attractive to parents.

The iPod refresh still confuses me though the flash storage will be higher on the iPod as I think Apple will max the miniPad at 16gb.
