HEATH LEDGER DIED of an accidental overdose in his New York apartment five years ago today.

The actor died just after he had finished filming The Dark Knight, and had begun work on The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

His death on 22 January 2008 came as a shock and much speculation ensued about the cause of his death.

An autopsy and toxicological report revealed that he had a cocktail of prescription drugs in his system, and that he had died of an accidental overdose.

On his fifth anniversary we remember Heath Ledger, and explore the reasons he’s missed…

We’ll never get to see him play The Joker again

Ledger’s turn as The Joker in The Dark Knight was critically acclaimed and for many it was the highlight of the movie. It’s a shame he never got to reprise the role.

Ten Things I Hate About You is so great

This was Ledger’s breakout role, and even though it’s a teen comedy, it’s one of the good ones.

He also displayed some pretty impressive singing abilities:

Ledger’s daughter Matilda (her mother is actress and Ledger’s former partner Michelle Williams) was just a toddler when her father died.

Her grandparents say that the seven-year-old is just like her dad, and that she looks just like the late actor.

Brokeback Mountain was so wonderful

2005’s Brokeback Mountain saw Ledger nominated for his first academy award for his portrayal as a cowboy who falls in love with Jake Gyllenhaal’s character. It’s a beautiful film and one of Ledger’s best.
