But others would prefer to get away for the festive season, somewhere tropical, warm, and totally escapist.

With the help of TripAdvisor, we’ve compiled a list of the top 10 swim-up bars, in far-flung, gorgeous locations.

Even though most of us won’t be leaving home this Christmas, it costs nothing to gaze on these photos and imagine spending time in an exotic location…

  • Pada Resort Bali at Legian

When it's rainy and dull outside, we sometimes imagine we're lying by the pool here, at this Indonesian resort, with the sun beating down and the day stretching out before us. What do you mean, it's all a dream? [Pic via Esme Vos on Flickr]
  • Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa

Imagine grabbing a Red Stipe and stretching out on a sun lounger at this resort in Jamaica... bliss! [Pic via TripAdvisor ]
  • Holiday Village Rhodes

Based in Kolimbia, Greece, you'll want to dive into this gorgous blue pool or go wandering around the local area... or maybe just idle down the lazy river TripAdvisor
  • Hotel Mountain Paradise

The beautiful Hotel Mountain Paradise in Costa Rica is in the middle of the Arenal Volcano National Park, and boasts lush surroundings, a swim-up bar and so much to do see and do. Gorgeous. [Pic via TripAdvisor ]
  • North Beach Plantation

If you stay at the North Beach Plantation in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, expect to spend much of your time on the beach... and why wouldn't you, with sand and sea like this? [Pic via miss-britt on Flickr ]
  • Riu Touareg

The stunning beach at Riu Touareg on Boa Vista in the Cape Verde is just one of the main reasons to go here - and it looks pretty tempting to us... [Pic via wildwuddel on Flickr]
  • Excellence Playa Mujeres

Excellence Playa Mujeres is located in Cancun, Mexico, and looks like quite the place for honeymooning couples. Its five-stars no doubt stem from features like its martini bar, lazy river and ocean views... and the fact they serve food and drink in the pool! [Pic via pocketwiley on Flickr]
  • Dreams Punta Cana

Dreams Punta Cana, in Punta Cana, the Dominican Republic, has a swim-up bar, a weekly ice-cream party, sailboats, an ocean trampoline and a weekly capming night with a barbecue. We can dream... [Pic via MyFavoritePetSitter on Flickr]
  • Beaches Turks and Caicos

This resort in Providenciales is all-inclusive, so you can swim right up to the bar and order whatever you wish. And then there's the food, nightlife and large pool... [Pic via √oхέƒx on Flickr ]
  • Room Mate Grace

When thinking of luxury hotels with swim-up bars, you'd assume these could only exist in a resort. But this downtown New York hotel has a poolside bar - and not a palm tree in sight. [Pic via TJdeGroat on Flickr ]

3 star hotel abroad with sun shining is better than a 5 star hotel in Ireland looking out the rain drenched window.

    • Aydo…..I have to agree…..we holidayed at home this year & the weather was awful…..cost a fortune to entertain the kids….paid €1000 for holiday home for a week & the TV didn’t even work – it never worked as there is no reception whatsoever in the village- can you imagine my GAA mad husband on the Sunday we arrived unable to watch the match….& it rained non stop for the week….I’d rather not go on holidays than suffer that again :-(

    • These places do look gorgeous but I have to say I’m a fan of a good Irish holiday. It does rain in Ireland so get use to it..buy a good lidle wet suit for the summer and say F you to the rain and go swimming anyhow..kids love it. Throw on the layers in the winter and go for a good long walk, build sand castles, pick shells – quality time doesn’t require sunshine. There’s nothing like coming home to a nice open fire after a blustery winter walk to blow the cobwebs away. If you shop around you can get some gorgeous holiday homes in Ireland out of season for less than 500 euro and about 600 – 700 in season. Cheaper than a foreign holiday and less hastle if you have kids. We never holidayed abroad when I was a kid..stayed in a house there a few years back in Mayo that had no tv. 400 euro for a week and right beside the beach, we took lots of walks and talked/read/played cards in the evenings. Children remember the quality time their parents spend with them not what’s on tv or what the weather was like.
