Has The Onion gone too far with #CongressHostage story?

SATIRICAL PUBLICATION The Onion has confirmed that tweets, a story and a video in which it is reporting an armed hostage taking place on Capitol Hill in Washington are intentional – although the story is not true.

The story and tweet has caused controversy on Twitter with confusion among some users as to whether the site and Twitter had been hacked.

However, a spokesperson for the company’s offices in New York confirmed to TheJournal.ie that neither the website nor the Twitter account had been hacked and that the story was intended.

Police on Capitol Hill have had to confirm that the tweets are reporting false information and that they are investigating according to local television, WUSA 9.

The publication, renowned for reporting fake stories, often parodying current events, has posted a story which details a fake hostage situation.

It has been updated this evening with a fake video of a child being shot by ‘Democratic congressman Daniel Lipsinki’:

The ‘story’ describes members of the US congress brandishing shotguns and semi-automatic pistols. The Onion ‘reports’ that the members have taken a group of schoolchildren hostage, demanding $12 trillion in cash before 6pm or else they would kill the children.

The ‘story’ first broke in series of tweets posted from The Onion Twitter account:

Updates also appeared on The Onion’s Facebook page.

The ‘story’ also details supposed demands from the congressmen who are said to be led by current House Speaker John Boehner which include: “guaranteed re-election in 2012, reduction of the veto-override threshold from two-thirds to one half of the Senate, new desks, and safe transport to Reagan National Airport with a fueled-up private jet waiting on the runway.”

It also carries a photoshopped picture of Boehner holding a gun to young child’s head alongside a man in a suit wearing a balaclava and holding an AK-47 machine gun:

Users on Twitter haven’t got the joke however.

Richard Gosling tweeted: “This must be a joke in which case, poor taste.” While, Renee Sailors said: ”@TheOnion has just lost a follower. Very bad decision to post”.

It begs the question, did those followers on Twitter who took offence think that all The Onion’s previous news stories were real?

      A) Some people might have seen it retweeted out of context – the absurdity didn’t kick in till the second tweet

      B) A lot of people are taking offense at it as a bad piece of satire, not as a bad piece of reporting.

      (c) That’s not what begging the question means http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Begging_the_question

I was quite happy to concede that point Stewart, eager to learn the origin of the term I had used in haste (though I think the intent was perfectly clear). But the wiki link you posted told me that ‘begging the question’ is “when a proposition which requires proof is assumed without proof”, which is precisely what I had done, perhaps drawing your fire by putting it in the form of a question? But thanks anyway. It was fun to learn.

I realise your comment may have been directed at Aonghus, but it’s been a long week, and I am notoriously thin skinned.

From what I’ve seen, responses are more like “Woah. Too far, Onion.” than “HOW DARE THEY DECEIVE US!”

“This must be a joke” guy, on the other hand…

Ok 1) not everyone might be up to date on the onion and their tendency to ‘stretch the truth’.
    2) if it got retweeted then it would be taken out of context.
    3) it’s America.

      4) If they’re dumb enough to think this was real given that the preceding tweet was “Small-Town Sheriff Has Actually Killed Surprising Amount Of People”, then they’re too dumb to be worth worrying about.
      5) This is hilarious to watch. It’s like the American Idol audience was just asked to do thoracic surgery on Rick Perry.

Picture the scene. You’re browsing twitter. You notice that someone you follow has retweeted a message from an account you don’t recognise which reads:

“BREAKING: Witnesses reporting screams and gunfire heard inside Capitol building.”

Naturally, you freak the fuck out, and you research it. Investigating, you discover the following tweets describing the hostage situation. I don’t think it’s at all unreasonable to get pissed off at this point. I wouldn’t, personally (though I do think that it’s a bit too far), but I can see why people would.

Picture the scene – you’re an adult, a fully grown member of society who has the right to vote and shape social policy, and you believe everything you read.

Yeah, that’s something to get pissed off at allright.

When I read something I react to it first, I don’t go “Hm. If this is true this would be terrible. I’d best go do some research so I can now for sure before I start reacting.” I go “Holy shit, is this for real?” and then attempt to determine whether or not it is. And I don’t think it’s unreasonable for someone who believed it was to then be angry that they were “misled”.

Well said, Mark. How is The Onion’s fault that people re-tweet its jokes without attribution, and still others get upset because they rely on Twitter for facts? Any second now someone will be complaining that they were fooled into thinking that Hitler only had got one ball.

But isn’t misleading your audience central to humour? This isn’t a problem with The Onion’s content, it’s a problem with people not double checking their facts.

Mark: is it to get a feeling for the policies and beliefs of the people contending for leadership of your country, so you can make an informed decision when voting?

Julian: Humour is subjective – evidently some people do find it funny, just as some people find it offensive. YMMV. Point is the same as everything they do – making people laugh. Time will tell whether they’ve failed or not.

@Aonghus Really? I thought it was to cheer Rick Perry for officiating over more executions than any other governer in US history, or to scream “Let him die” at Ron Paul when debating health insurance coverage for people who are struck by sudden serious illnesses? Or am I just not getting the joke?

Surely if people saw it and didn’t know it was fake, the first thing they would do is go to a reputable news source to get more information? And if a story like this was true you know it would be all over CNN, sky news etc. It’s like another war of the worlds situation!
