THE LEANING TOWER of Pisa and the stadium which will play host to two Irish games in Euro 2012 have been added to the list of global landmarks which are set to turn green on Saturday for St Patrick’s Day.

Tourism minister Leo Varadkar this morning announced a new batch of landmarks and well-known tourist traps which will turn green for the day to mark Ireland’s national holiday.

Other places turning green include the fountain at the Plaza de Cibeles in Madrid – best known for being overrun by Real Madrid fans after their team’s major victories – and the city halls of San Francisco, Brussels and Vienna.

An entire town on Spain’s Costa Blanca, Moraira, will be turnin green, as well the Coit Tower in San Francisco and the Selfridges department store in London.

The Glasgow Eye and the Clyde Auditorium – better known locally as ‘the Armadillo’ – are also adopting Ireland’s national colour, as is a replica of the Chrysler Building at the New York New York hotel in Las Vegas.

Varadkar said the inclusion of new landmarks on the ‘greening’ list would promote Ireland to millions of potential visitors, and that the campaign would give potential tourists “the green light to visit – literally”.

Tourism Ireland chief executive Niall Gibbons said the saturation coverage given to Ireland was an “invaluable boost” for promoting Irish tourism.

Other venues which had previously announced their intentions to turn green include Niagara Falls, the London Eye and the Burj al Arab in Dubai.
