Knees-up! Mrs Brown confounds critics with a Bafta nomination

Brendan O’Carroll is gobsmacked – along with many of his critics – after Mrs Brown’s Boys gets the nod from the prestigious Baftas.

AT LAST, long-suffering Irish mammies everywhere have a reason to smile.

Brendan O’Carroll’s Mrs Brown’s Boys has been nominated for a coveted Bafta nomination, beating off competition from the likes of Inbetweeners, Friday Night Dinner and Him & Her, the Guardian reports.

The show is a joint collaboration between the BBC and RTE, and regularly attracts millions of viewers in Britain – despite being slammed by the critics.

The Guardian called it “predictable, vulgar” but admitted to having a sneaky laugh or two, while Metro newspaper described it as “truly terrifying”.

But bad reviews have never bothered Brendan O’Carroll, who says:

I don’t know one reviewer yet who has stopped people going to a show, or has made a show successful. It is down to the audience. Irish and UK audiences seem to vote with their arse and not with by what they read.

O’Carroll told the Irish Times he was “gobsmacked”.

Are you a fan? Have your say in our poll – or to check out this clip to see what all the fuss is about.

So what do you think – do you agree with the critics, or the Bafta judges? Is the nomination deserved?

I can’t stand Brendan O’Carroll but fair dues on the nomination!

  • I guess to each their own. Some people don’t get this type of plotless, predictable and often vulgar humor and I guess I am one of them. I thought Mrs Brown would have been killed off a long time ago but she is obviously still popular with audiences. Fair play to Brendan but I have to say I’m very surprised by this nomination.

  • Brendan O’Carroll does what he knows best. He brings out a side of irish culture that is present, even if we don’t want to admit it. To all those who criticise, please have a look and listen to the shows. There have been some very good and decent messages plus his comedy in there. I reckon the shows will go the way of Father Ted.
Brendan has done a lot to bring on talent in Ireland and has given a platform for Irish actors to showcase their talent.
Anyway, the first show where he walks back through the sets to get his cigarettes was absolutely priceless. :)

  • Nothing Comic about a Situation where we’re represented abroad by misogynistic, neanderthal, f”ckwit Brendan O’Carroll

  • Sorry to break it to you Mairtin, but with a third of the population, Dublin is just as much Ireland as anywhere else in this country!
