GAY BYRNE, FOR 37-years the host of the Late Late Show, will return to Irish television screens every Friday for six weeks this summer, according to a newspaper report today.

The Irish Mail on Sunday says that the 76-year-old broadcaster will host a new RTÉ music and chat show entitled ‘For One Night Only’ which will in fact run for six nights over a six-week period in July and August.

The programmes will be pre-recorded and filming will begin shortly, the paper reports, adding that the guests for the programmes are yet to be finalised and RTÉ have not officially confirmed the programme.

  • It’s a joke that rte have to keep rolling out the same old heads time and time again….yes Gaybo was good back in the day but seriously move on! Is there really such a lack of broadcasting talent in this country? Give some new people a chance, they couldn’t be much worse than some of the current presenters!

  • RTE must be desperate to get the viewer figures up.

  • With all the upcoming talent in this country – such fantastic talent to choose from – why are we still using Gay Byrne a 76 year old to host yet another Friday night late show ? I think this is what is wrong with this country. Gay Byrne while a great broadcaster in his day and still is, should be moving over and let other people start making money from a career in television presenting. He has had his day and made his money. I think its greed !! Another example I can give is the teachers that retire in this country. They do the years, get great security in their jobs while they teach, then they retire, get their gratutity and within months of retiring they are back in the classroom subbing !! They get over 200 euro for each day they sub I believe and can earn up to about 19,000 a year without it effecting their pension !! No wonder half or maybe 3/4 of all teaching graduates in this country cannot get work placement and have no chance of getting a permanent teaching post. The Dept of Education sent out a notice to all school principals last year encouraging them to employ newly qualified teachers or teachers who are out of work as subs if at all possible and not to be calling on retired teachers but left this decision to the Board of Management of schools. This is not acceptable. !! There should be a blanket , countrywide ban on such behaviour !! Should be compulsory to call in teachers who are out of work NOT THE RETIRED ONES !! Anyone else out there agree with me ?

  • What a legend…fair play and not afraid to ask the tough questions unlike some who have tried to fill his shoes. Best of luck Uncle Gaybo.
