GAME OF THRONES author George R R Martin has spoken out about the scene in this week’s episode, in which Jaime Lannister rapes his sister Cersei beside their son Joffrey’s coffin.

The incident has caused an outcry among fans because it differs from the events of the books, which depict the sex as consensual.

Martin has addressed the differences in a blog post, in which he explains that the timeline of the story at this point if not the same in the books and the TV show, leading to altered actions by the characters:

In the novels, Jaime is not present at Joffrey’s death, and indeed, Cersei has been fearful that he is dead himself, that she has lost both the son and the father/ lover/ brother. And then suddenly Jaime is there before her. Maimed and changed, but Jaime nonetheless. Though the time and place is wildly inappropriate and Cersei is fearful of discovery, she is as hungry for him as he is for her.

Martin says that the “whole dynamic is different in the show” and that “neither character is in the same place as the books”.

Martin stops short of criticising the show’s makers, explaining that he doesn’t think Cersei’s dialogue and actions in the book would fit in with the timeline of the TV programme, which may explain the decision to see the scene turn to one of rape.

He does however distance himself from it, saying:

… we never discussed this scene, to the best of my recollection.

Meanwhile fans of the books and the show have been threatening to boycott Game of Thrones, criticising the interpretation of Jaime’s character and the gratuitous nature of the scene.

Fans have also pointed out that this is not the first time the show has turned a sex scene in to a rape scene:
