Check out the most popular places for Irish holidaymakers this year.

A NEW SURVEY of Irish holidaymakers has found that London was the most popular city overall for a break during the first half of 2011 and the US was the most popular country for visitors from Ireland, with six US cities among the top 20.

New York topped the list of US cities, coming second overall as a favoured destination for Irish tourists. Las Vegas and Orlando made the top ten, while San Francisco, Chicago and Boston came in at numbers 13, 15 and 17 respectively.

Meanwhile, Dublin was the most popular location for Irish people on holidays within the state, while the country’s cheapest destination – Limerick – came fourth. The figures released by Hotels.com are based on bookings made on 125,000 hotels in 19,000 destinations.

Data recently released by the Central Statistics Office shows that the number of overseas visitors to Ireland increased by 9.4 per cent this summer compared with the same period of last year. In total, 1,948,800 people visited Ireland from overseas between May and July 2011.

Meanwhile, 1.8 per cent fewer Irish residents travelled overseas this summer than last year.
