GALLERY: an Irish sheep worth €108,000 – and 7 other pricey pets

A Laois man has sold a sheep for €108,000 at a Scottish fair – so we thought we’d look at some other expensive animals.

A LAOIS MAN has today broken the world record for the price of a Suffolk sheep – by selling one of his herd for €108,000.

RTÉ News reports that Dan Tynan’s unnamed sheep smashed the previous record for the sale of a Suffolk sheep; before now, the most anyone had paid for such an animal was €90,000 in 1998.

With the new record in mind, we decided to have a look at some of the other expensive pets you can buy if you’re so inclined.

  • Expensive pets (1) - White Lion Cubs

White lion cubs are occasionally found in wildlife reserves in South Africa, and their rarity means it's difficult to calculate just how many there may be - though one estimate says there are less than 300 in the world. A cub like this could be yours for a mere €97,000. (AP Photo/Darko Vojinovic)
  • Expensive pets (2) - Capuchin monkeys

You may have guessed from the name, but Capuchin monkeys are named after the monks who wear robes and hoods covering their faces. They tend only to produce one or two offspring each year, and can live up to 55 years in captivity. In some US states, they're used to assist the handicapped. Yours for ,000 (€7,000). • Expensive pets (3) - Savannah cat

Savannah cats are a cross between a house cat and an African serval, with their value dependant on the purity of the serval's own breeding. The most expensive sub-breed - an F1 - has a parent which is 100% serval. Savannah cats are notoriously difficult to breed - to the point where most professional breeders don't succeed in doing so. Prices can range up to €15,000. Photo: miheco via Flickr.
  • Expensive pets (4) - Pastel Butter Stripe Ball Python

Ball pythons are cross-bred in dozens of ways but the Pastel Butter variety is particularly coveted for its bright, distinctive colouring. One like this has been sold for ,500 (€5,250). (Photo courtesy of Business Insider.)
  • Expensive pets (5) - White Tufted Marmoset

OK, we're cheating a bit: this isn't a White Tufted Marmoset, it's actually a silvery one. But technically these creatures are the world's smallest monkey and are notoriously difficult to train. If you want to try your luck at domesticating it, it could be yours for a bargain (!) ,000. (Ian Nicholson/PA)
  • Expensive pets (6) - Tibetan Mastiff

Tibetan Mastiffs are unusual among larger breeds of dog in that they are almost universally friendly and not in the slightest bit troublesome. Despite their meek nature, they're also highly-prized guard dogs and can often kill to protect a flock of livestock. The top breeds can fetch up to €450,000. (AP Photo/ Gemunu Amarasinghe)
  • Expensive pets (7) - Clone your own labrador

An honourable mention must be reserved for Sir Lancelot Encore, a three-year-old golden labrador from Florida. As his name may suggest, he's not the first of his kind: he's a clone. Owners Edgar and Nina Otto loved the original Lancelot so much than when he died of cancer, they paid 5,000 (€109,000) to have his DNA harvested and implanted into another egg - and apparently the dog quickly picked up the same behavioural traits as the original.
