Worst in show? 23 dogs who’d rather be anywhere else

There are pictures in here of people putting makeup on dogs.

EARLIER THIS WEEK Banana Joe, an Affenpinscher from Holland was named Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York.

Here he is, trotting triumphantly around the ring with his handler Ernesto Lara:

But what about the dogs who don’t make it to Best in Show? The dogs that wish they were anywhere else but here?

This is for them…

  • Attended Crufts dog show in Birmingham a few years ago…. Nothing good to be said about the event. Dogs, who, as somebody has already mentioned, just want to be out running around, instead, being kept in crates all day long until the section of the show where they were to participate. Then, their owners roughly brushing their coats, ignoring the obvious discomfort their dogs were going through. In the past few years, the BBC stopped broadcasting the show, whilst the RSPCA withdrew from the show in protest at what it stated were concerns about the health of some of the animals. Nothing but selfish human indulgence, and its the animals that suffer. (Whilst discussing dogs, and their welfare, there are lots of lovely dogs in county council pounds atm, having been abandoned/ dumped after the usual Christmas market for puppies, most of which come from puppy farms). They are given only 5 days before been ‘put to sleep’, so if you can , adopt one and save its life.

  • Show toy dogs but the working dogs should be outside. That bloodhound should be running after Rambo and the beagle sniffing everyone getting off the Amsterdam flight at Cork airport.

  • The dogs are beautiful and who ever made up the comments to go with pictures is hilarious ! Well done !
As for the owners … Well what can I say some of them don’t seem to be dog lovers to put their dogs through all that misery for the sake of a prestige of a title and a trophy .
I love to see my dogs running around even when they are wet and muddy …. Bet some of those beautiful dogs would love to trade and have a little fun time !

  • I once saw a tv show about cruft a and the kennel club and it was dreadful. It talked about culling a breed of dog called a ridge back if it was born without the deformity of the ridge along its spine. healthy dogs put down because they don’t reach kennel club standards. That show also showed someone who had a pink patch on their dogs nose tattooed so it would look all black for competition. And they call themselves dog lovers

  • I showed and owned shihtzus and Maltese for many years as well as handling other larger breeds ( boxers, irish wolfhounds etc) for their owners. My dogs were (are) spoiled rotten, very obedient ( basic and advanced commands) and loved unconditionally. They came everywhere with me, slept with me, were groomed daily and had regular check ups with the vet. Monday to friday were regular dogs, running, getting dirty, playing fetch, chewing on my shoes etc…On the weekend of a show my dog would be washed, blow dried and groomed on a Friday/Saturday night, competed on the Saturday/Sunday and once the show was over were free to their favourite thing…running like mad hatters in grass or after my group heading over to the agility section for some fun. My dogs were long coated breeds and very important to look after their coats but they still had the freedom to be dogs. There are some owners that do not allow their long coated breeds to do what I allowed mine to do but that is personal choice…and of course there are some that can be very hard/harsh towards their dogs, and some that are downright cruel ..culling puppies because of breed standard faults instead of finding pet homes is one of my biggest issues( in my opinion these should not show or own dogs). But the same can be said for owners outside of the show world..
I know that most show dogs are spoiled, well taken care of and the majority of them are in the best mental and physical health and have the best diets.

    • Ok I can appreciate that there are some people out there that love and take care of their dogs. The worry is that some of these dogs are mutilated and mistreated for a trophy and a few bob. I understand that the worst will always be used as an example to prove this point. I think people generally disagree with the k club’s definition of a dog and the efforts “not always honest or noble” that some owners and breeders go to to achieve these standards. Some of the methods used could be compared in terms of cruelty to the other end of the scale such as using dogs to fight.

    • Wow, a lot of one sided comments from people who clearly have no first hand experience at showing dogs.
      I second everything Nina said.
The comments under the article are silly, dogs love spending time with their owners no matter what they are doing.

  • And just to add…my dogs loved getting dried and groomed for a show( washed? not so much lol) and were happy and giddy at the shows..tails wagging, socialising with other dogs, attention from other owners/handlers etc. again, not all show owners allowed their dogs such freedom.

  • Cruel ,what a stupid thing to say, there dogs for Christ sake. Its a few funny photos the dogs are loved. You don’t get it Pampered pooches!!.As soon as the shows over the will be going home and set free in the garden to pee and crap all over the place!!.Dont anthropomorphise. The dogs don’t care they are happy. How many happy guide dogs do you see walking down the street wagging his tail.??None because the dog is happy doing what he loves concentrating on looking after his owner.!!

  • These people obviously love their dogs. That’s what they’ve been bread for. It’s not cruel.
