Photos from the archives: policing in Ireland

From the crowds gathered along O’Connell Street to RIC officers in the park – take a look through the photographic archives of the Garda Museum.

THE ROYAL IRISH Constabulary, founded in 1867, was disbanded in 1922 following the War of Independence, paving the way for the creation of a police force which would become An Garda Síochána.

The Civic Guard was established in the RIC’s wake, which was later renamed An Garda Síochána. A separate Dublin force, established in 1836, merged with the national organisation in 1925.

The Garda Museum has compiled a range of documents, photographs and artefacts for its exhibitions on the history of policing in Ireland, including the following images:
