It’s Friday (the 13th)! So here’s a slideshow of black cats and kittens from around the world

For the day that’s in it.

WE’VE GONE BACK to our roots here at TheJournal.ie’s cute animal picture division. You may not remember but the Friday slideshow started out way back in November 2011 when we wanted to show the nicer side of the donkey after it had gotten a bad rap in the news.

And it all sort of evolved from there. Since those early days, we’ve featured little known creatures such as capybaras, sloths and anteaters, as well as the under-appreciated gerbils, ferretsfoxes, squirrels and hedgehogs for, well, no good reason except that it was Friday.

But today, we have reason. Black cats everywhere have suffered through years of people believing they bring bad luck but, today, on the most superstition-filled dates, we challenge anyone to find anything unlucky about these adorable pets:

  • Classy coat

Black-and-white is always going to look classy.
  • Paws Up

  • I'm watching you

This cat is taking no chances as Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesperson Vince Cable in the UK knocks on its owner's door in Twickenham, Middlesex.
  • Just chillin'

  • Who said we were enemies?

  • Adopt me, maybe?

  • Hill's Pet Slimmer of the Year

Yes, you read that title correctly. Mischief here is a black and white moggy from Stevenage who won the prize after dropping 5kg (represented by the butter pile here).
  • A boy's best friend

Twenty-two month year old Daniel Faith, from Broughshane, Antrim enjoys his first experience of snow with his cat called TC.
  • Awwww

Eighteen month old cat Ash was looking for a home after being rescued from a boiler flue where he had been trapped for 10 days. He became stuck after plunging 15ft down the shaft of a derelict building in Gloucestershire and could only be rescued from the narrow flue because he had lost so much weight in the time he was trapped.
  • Eye on the ball

Jimmy the cat, a keen Subbuteo player, with his owner, 10-year-old Andrew Tierney of Cowling, North Yorkshire, in London this afternoon (Wednesday) after he was proclaimed Cat of the Year. The four-year-old black and white feline was rescued after he was thrown on a bonfire and has gone on to become a keen football fan.
