EU Presidencies can be expensive things to host, with Ireland spending €90 million back in those heady days of 2004.
In these straitened times, however, we’ll be spending a mere €60 million when we host it again next year. But it gets better… in a way.
Minister of State for European Affairs Lucinda Creighton has suggested that this time around businesses can do some of the heavy lifting by sponsoring the presidency.
With the deadline for companies to come on board expiring last week, we have started to wonder just who may have nabbed it.
Perhaps a fast food chain which shall remain nameless could inject some added democracy into things… The EU Presidency. Have it your way!
Or what about Europe’s bigwigs all donning Jedward-like runners? In addition to bouncing around for no good reason, their response to criticism could be to ‘Just Do It’.
Or maybe it’ll be something as boring and predictable as a credit card company.
After all, there are some things money can’t buy. For everything else, there’s the IMF.
But that’s enough suggestions from us. Who do you think should sponsor it and why?
