England tried to welcome home their women's football team, but failed hard

Doh.

THE ENGLAND WOMEN’S World Cup team have just returned to London after one of their most successful shows for the country since 1966.

The England Twitter account is glad, as they can now return to being “mothers, partners and daughters”.

Well, that’s the impression given by this (now deleted) tweet that appeared on their account this morning.

The internet had some questions.

Had they stopped being these things during the campaign? Are they no longer footballers now?

But what about the real issue here…

The account has spent time over the past few weeks bigging up the team on Twitter, so it felt like a u-turn to many.

The FA has said it was all taken out of context, and was meant as an insight into the personal lives of the players. They said the tweet linked to an article about players being reunited with families that included a similar line.

However, we understand that an element of the story appears to have been taken out of context and the opening paragraph was subsequently revised to reflect that fact.
