Drunk man survives being compacted – twice – after sleep in dumpster

He emerged with only minor injuries, as the recycling truck wasn’t carrying a full load.

BELIEVING HE WAS too drunk to drive, Justin Gilpatrick decided instead to sober up with a nap in a nearby recycling dumpster full of cardboard.

But it was collection day. Some time after 1am, the rubbish truck arrived, emptied the container and went along its route in Portland, Oregon. The load – including 27-year-old Gilpatrick – was compacted twice along the way, KGW News reports.

Eventually hearing Gilpatrick’s screams, the driver stopped the truck and released him. He was taken to hospital for minor injuries.

Apparently he was able to survive because there wasn’t a full load in the truck.

He had to be persuaded not to walk away after the accident but to stay for treatment, the New York Daily News reports.

Portland police have said he will not face charges.
