Downton Abbey

7 moments from the Downton Abbey premiere that Twitter couldn't stop talking about

“I’m going upstairs to take off my hat.”

LAST NIGHT, DOWNTON Abbey kicked off its fifth season to the delight of its many fans.

Viewing figures were the lowest since 2010, but it was still watched by 8.4 million people and it dominated Twitter with the show still trending in Ireland this afternoon.

Here are the seven moments from the season premiere that had Twitter talking.

1. “I’m not a hater”

Tom Branson uttered this line. We’re not historians, but were people using the word ‘hater’ in 1924?

2. “I’m going upstairs to take off my hat.”

Lady Mary announced that she was “going upstairs” to take off her hat in the most Downton Abbey moment ever.

Many saw this as a new get-out-of-awkward-conversation line.

While others wondered if they had been doing it wrong all these years.

3.  The awkwardness of Lord Grantham’s dog being named Isis.

Well, that’s unfortunate.

4. This pearl of wisdom from the Dowager Countess.

“Principles are like prayers, noble, of course, but awkward at a party.”

Surely the line of the night, as a Twitter search reveals countless viewers just tweeting the quip verbatim.

We love you, Dowager Countess.

5. The ageless cast.

When the series began, Downton Abbey was set in 1912.

We’re now in 1924 and the cast don’t appear to have aged a day.

6. The Labour government.

In this season of Downton Abbey, the UK is ruled by a Labour government.

Suffice to say, Lord Grantham is not a fan.

Some people enjoyed the show’s treatment of the Labour goverment.

Others? Not so much.

7. And finally, that Amazon Kindle sponsorship.

Amazon Kindle are the new sponsors of Downton Abbey.

That, of course, meant several adverts featuring cast members reading their Kindles while on break from shooting. Viewers were not happy with this.

And when Lady Mary literally tossed a paperback in the fire, people grew suspicious.
