A DETROIT MAN has found himself at the centre of a massive fundraising campaign after a news article about his daily work commute went viral.
On Sunday, Detroit Free Press published an article about 56-year-old James Robertson, who walks 21 miles to and from work every day.
Why?
Because Robertson does not own a car and much of the area in which he lives isn’t served by public transportation.

According to the Detroit Free Press, this commute combined with his eight-hour shift consumes twenty hours of his day. Despite the staggering journey, his employer says that he has never missed a day.
Robertson’s inspiring story quickly went viral and sparked much outcry.

That’s when 19-year-old student Evan Leedy stepped in.
After reading Robertson’s story, Leedy decided to set up an online fundraiser to buy Robertson a car. His initital fundraising goal was $5,000.
Thanks to the internet, he has more than surpassed that goal with the running total standing at over $200,000.
The pair reportedly met last night with Robertson thanking Leedy for his efforts.

According to an update posted on the campaign’s page, a trust is being set up to administer the donations.
What an incredible journey. James is an amazing guy and it was so great meeting him last night. Blake Pollock and myself are working on creating a board/committee to handle the money that is raised. Attorneys, financial advisors, ect, are all coming into play. We are making sure to consider every angle of this fundraiser. It is so exciting that every penny that is being raised is going to James to help him with whatever he needs in life.
