Battered

Have you ever had a deep-fried Mars bar? We put them to the test

A Mars bar encased in hot batter ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

THE DEEP-FRIED MARS bar is a cult Scottish dessert that has now achieved global recognition as one of the less healthy batter creations ever made – which is quite the feat.

Once we found out that a select few chippers in Ireland actually sell them, we got together a round table of testers from DailyEdge.ie and TheJournal.ie to sample the delights of a battered Mars bar. The first impressions were not too bad:

They are nicer than they look.
Surprisingly nice. Chewy, caramelly, far less disgusting than its appearance would have you believe. It’s surprising that the structural integrity of the Mars inside is visible.

One slight problem that the panel encountered was that the fryer oil that the Mars bars were cooked in was obviously the same as used for fish:

I think they fried these in the same batter as they fry fish in – so there is a little hint of fish.
There is a touch of fish to the batter that I don’t like.

It was the key issue for some:

If the batter was cooked in a clean fryer, they would be really nice.

So close to being the delicious batter-based snack they needed in their life.

Overall impressions though?

I couldn’t eat a whole one – but I couldn’t eat a whole Mars as is, as they’re so sickly. Would be nice with some ice cream, shared with someone.

Some people would try the deep-fried Mars bar again:

Overall, despite the odd trace of fish, I liked that. 7/10, would eat again.
Really not as bad as I thought they would be. I came in with low expectations.

But there are some that won’t remember the deep-fried Mars bar with any fondness:

I really didn’t like it, and I love chocolate. The batter really messed it up.
I don’t mean to be dramatic saying this, but that was an abomination.
I prefer Mars bars when they were just mars bars.

A sentiment shared by many probably. A nostalgia for an age where chocolate wasn’t battered. It was a simpler time, perhaps a better time.

Have you ever tried a battered Mars bar either here or in its spiritual home of Scotland? Let us know your experiences of this unique dessert.
