catcalling

Here's why people aren't impressed with this video of men watching their girlfriends get catcalled

The Cosmopolitan video has criticised by some on social media.

YESTERDAY, COSMOPOLITAN POSTED a video entitled Men React to Their Girlfriends Getting Catcalled.

Cosmopolitan filmed three women being catcalled in New York City and then showed teh footage to the women’s boyfriends.

Needless to say, they were far from impressed.

I’m getting pissed off.
That’s so messed up.

The video was hailed in some quarters for drawing attention to the issue of catcalling and highlighting what an unpleasant experience it can be.

But not everyone is so enamoured with the video.

In fact, it has drawn widespread criticism from people who are uncomfortable with the nature of the experiment — namely that it involves men “validating” an experience that women have spoken about for years.

Some viewers felt that the men in the video missed the point altogether…

While others noted that it incorrectly frames catcalling as something only experienced by straight women with boyfriends — sorry, LGBT/single women.

As The Gloss wrote:

Having men react to footage of their girlfriends being catcalled makes it seem like the only time people should be outraged is if the woman is in a committed relationship and has a man to be furious for her. And, on top of that, having men react at all makes it seem like the only people who are allowed to express their rage at peoples’ disgusting catcalling habits are those brave men who are prepared to stand up for the little, meek woman.

The video has been viewed almost 150,000 times on YouTube in just 24 hours and a further 250,000 times on Facebook.

What is ‘vocal fry’ and why is everyone talking about it?

This engagement photo is going viral for a seriously awkward reason >
