MTV IS TO host a big music event in Cork City Hall later this year, featuring a mix of Irish talent and “two megastars” that have yet to be announced.

The event will bring MTV back to the Republic of Ireland for the first time in 15 years, and tickets for the event will be limited to 800, but be free of charge and allocated on a competition metric.

The event, ‘MTV Crashes Cork’ will take place in November-December and will be broadcast across MTV’s UK music channels to over 40 countries. The collaboration with Cork County Council was won in a bidding war between the city tourism board and two other Irish cities, as reported in February by the Irish Examiner.

Kerry Taylor, Senior Vice President, General Manager, MTV UK said Cork is the perfect destination for the music channel to ‘crash’.

Ireland has an amazing musical heritage, and Cork as its second largest city, is a perfect destination for MTV to ‘crash’.  We’re really looking forward to working with the local partners to stage a fantastic live music event as well as showcasing what the city has to offer to our youth audience.

Cork City Council’s Director of Corporate Services & External Affairs Valerie O’Sullivan, said that it is “a fantastic day for Cork” and hopefully will provide a huge draw to the city.

The event comes after similar gigs across the UK, including MTV Crashes Plymouth in July which featured the Kaiser Chiefs and MTV Crashes Derry, which took place last week with a headlining slot from Professor Green.

Liz Meaney, Cork City Arts Officer said that the event is just the beginning for showcasing Cork, which has a “fantastic heritage and legacy with music”.
