Commonwealth Games unveil secret policing weapon... monkeys

Games officials enlist the help of Langur monkeys as problems with packs of wild monkeys grow.

OFFICIALS IN NEW DELHI are deploying a crack squad of langur monkeys to marshal smaller monkeys and prevent them from causing trouble at the Commonwealth Games.

The long-tailed langurs are regarded as one of the more fierce species of monkeys found on the Indian subcontinent, and are aggressive towards other monkeys.

The monkeys, along with handlers drafted in from the surrounding areas, are being asked to patrol the athlete’s village following complaints as one South African reporter found a snake in his room.

Packs of wild monkeys have descended on New Delhi following heavy monsoon rains. The monkeys have stolen food and attacked visitors.
