All of these assets are of strategic value. If any purchaser is found it will be on the basis that a profit can be made from the investment. There is no reason why the same profit cannot be made by us the people through the current state ownership.
It makes you wonder if any member of the Government ever negotiated a business investment in his / her life. They certainly seem to be seriously lacking in any sense of entrepreneurship in handling our money.

Not enough money or power my foot. Local authorities are getting €100 per household and an extra €200 per non Residential. The new tax goes to and I quote from their recent leaflet ” local services, public parks, libraries, open spaces and leisure amenities, Planning and Development, fire and emergency services, street maintenance and lighting. Call out a fire brigade and you will be charged, apply for planning and you will be charged, more lies from Local authorities. Most of this money will be spent by the boys at the top. Firefighters are using sub standard equipment and our parks are a mess. Local authorities need to be streamlined from the top down and in that order.

Dreadful piece. Poorly written hyperbole. Local councils need reform. However once clientelism and the influence of the private sector is removed, and laws put in place to severely punish those who would use local councils to enrich themselves and their cronies half the work will have been done.Then increased funding can be put in place in order to provide enhanced local services and boost employment in the provision thereof.

Yes, they should be government regulated Sheila.
Of course that regulation should not equate with censorship or the vilification of investigative journalists who highlight issues of public concern. Regulation should ensure that media is not spreading a message that suits the purpose of the corporate interests that own it rather than the public interest that it is there to serve.
The media has served this country very well over the years but that is being threatened now by corporate influences that have only one thing in mind – the circulation of their publications and the protection of their interests.

I was responding to you agreeing with another contributor who claims to be sick of LGBT people looking for ‘special privileges’. The same contributor then goes on to trivialise the very real problems of bullying and discrimination that gay people face by comparing it to being teased for having red hair.

That kind of statement irks me greatly because any fair or reasonable examination of the facts would show that far from looking for ‘special rights’ (which is a buzzword of the christian fundamentalists in the US), we have yet to fully secure equality under the law despite the fact that a large majority of Irish people support such a concept. And that kind of glib ‘special rights’ comment is further undermined when you consider such simple things as same-sex couples being afraid to hold hands in public for fear of being met with verbal abuse or worse – something straight couples do not even have to think twice about.

In terms of ‘community’, I was referring to the LGBT community, which I am happy to consider myself a part of. Society is made up of many different groups and it does not follow that by identifying with a particular group, you are marginalising yourself.

And I accept you are not anti-gay but please recognise that the battle for equality is a real and necessary one.
