ALMOST €300,000 HAS been raised for a man badly injured in the Colorado shooting.

Caleb Medley, who was taking steps to become a stand-up comedian, was at the Aurora movie theatre when he was shot on Friday.

According to the website set up to help raise money for hospital treatment, Caleb was struck in the eye, which had to be removed. He is now in intensive care.

Caleb’s wife, Katie – who was not injured in the shooting – was pregnant with their son Hugo at the time. Hugo was born yesterday and mother and son are said to be doing well.

Medley’s brother, Seth, spoke to CBS about Caleb, and said that his brother is “a strong guy”. The family have been told that medical bills could reach $2 million, and Caleb doesn’t have medical insurance to cover these costs.

According to the Support Caleb fundraising site, $295,722.05 has been raised so far out of a $500,000 goal.

James Holmes appeared in court on Monday to be briefed on the charges he is likely to face in relation to the shooting.

Holmes is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder, and he could also face additional counts of aggravated assault and weapons violations.

He is expected to be formally charged next Monday.

Health insurance companies have negotiating power, so they basically tell their “in-network” doctors what they’re going to get paid. When you get the bill you can see exactly what the original charge was, and what your insurance decided to pay. You don’t have to pay the difference.

A lot of people don’t have health insurance. Sometimes because they can’t afford it – even though there are cheap policies available that cover all fees in a given year over e.g. $10k. Obama is trying to change this, but interestingly enough a lot of people are objecting because they want to be able to choose not to pay for it.

  • American health care is so expensive. The hospitals charge right down to the tape and cotton ball they put on your arm after an injection. I was in the states a few years ago and my friend took very ill with diabetes . his hospital bill for 6 days was just over $70,000. ridiculous.

    • Yes that’s true, we pay monthly for what they pay weekly. And you have no real choice as you have to have it.

    • Income taxes are far lower, incomes are higher. That is part of the “how”.

The other part, this is just breathless hearsay. Americans are fascinated by the idea of “free health insurance” as we supposedly have in Ireland.

The last part – a $1000/month plan is what they call a “cadillac plan”. Maximum coverage and minimum outlay if you have medical bills. If you’re willing and able to cover some part of the bills yourself (a fractional part) then you can get health insurance much more cheaply.

eHealthInsurance.com plan for family for four = $239.10 per month.

We pay a hell of lot more in Ireland. Other European countries have better systems, but in Ireland they screw us and we have to like it.
