That unretouched photo of Cindy Crawford? The photographer says it's totally fake

The “unretouched” photo went viral a few weeks ago.

A FEW WEEKS ago, a photo purporting to be an unretouched photo of Cindy Crawford went viral and helped spark an online conversation on body image.

The photo was shared by ITV news anchor Charlene White and quickly became a sensation. (The tweet has since been deleted.)

Although it was initially reported that the photo was taken as part of a spread for Marie Claire, it later transpired that the image was a leak from a 2013 photo shoot.

And now it seems that that may also not be true.

Photographer John Russo, who took the photo, told ABC News that the photo was actually digitally altered, but not in the way you might think.

In a statement, Russo stated that the imperfections were doctored after the photo was stolen.

It has been falsely claimed that this photograph represents an un-retouched image of Cindy Crawford. This is not true. It is a fraudulent altered version of my photograph. I am grateful that this fact has been brought to the public’s attention and that corrections are being run in the media.

This contradicts Marie Claire’s earlier claims that the photo was real.

Many are citing a recent photo of Crawford as evidence that that earlier “unretouched” photo may not be so legit.

Following the leak, Crawford’s husband Rande Gerber posted this photo of the model in a bikini, in which she looks markedly different from the leaked photo.
