“Charlie Bird, RTÉ News”: 29 pictures that sum up the intrepid Mr Bird

IT IS HARD to believe that Charlie Bird has graced our TV screens and our radio airwaves for nearly 40 years but he has and now all that’s coming to an end.

The 63-year-old has announced his retirement from the State broadcaster and will finish-up on the Marian Finucane Show tomorrow morning which he has been guest presenting for the last number of weeks.

Bird made his name at RTÉ as a dogged reporter who broke some of the biggest stories and reported on everything from the IRA to tax evasion at National Irish Bank and along the way he charted the rise and fall of very many politicians.

His brief and unhappy stint as the station’s Washington correspondent was followed by a Charlie Bird Explores in which he had a pretty close encounter with a pair of seals.
