6 telltale signs that it's Budget Day

You know what day it is when…

IT COMES AROUND every year, and every year there are the familiar, reliable telltale signs.

That’s right – you can’t avoid it. It’s Budget Day, and here are some light-hearted ways you can always tell…

1. Goldrush

If fuel prices rise, you can be guaranteed a few beeping horns coming out of your nearest filling station.

2. And…

A liquid gold rush. Expect empty shelves in the off licence if there’s even a penny’s increase on the old booze. Sure it won’t go off. Another Budget Day classic is hearing your mates swear they’re off the fags for good this time. Make sure not to gloat when they don’t make it past Friday, eh?

3. Down with this sort of thing

Budget Day gives the good people of Ireland the perfect opportunity to exercise their democratic right to peaceful protest.

But if you’re not the sign carrying type, might be best to avoid Kildare Street and the accompanying traffic snarls.

4. Politicians look a bit spruced up

Is it just our imagination, or are they wearing nicer ties and shinier shoes than normal? Must be the guarantee that they’ll be on the box tonight. Those new HD channels call for a bit of spit-shine and a hasty comb of the hair.

5. Home and Away might get the chop

If there’s extensive Budget coverage, do expect delays to your favourite programming. Goodbye for now, Brax Brothers. We’ll see you on Wednesday, same time, same place.

6. Themed music

If you flick on the radio on Budget Day, you’re bound to hear some money-themed music – or, at least, more than on your average Tuesday. DJs love nothing if a bit of a theme, right?
