THE CANNES FILM FESTIVAL is currently in full swing, with the world’s critics packing into gala screenings in the south of France.

But controversy has erupted over reports this morning that women have been refused entry to the red carpet for not wearing high enough heels.

According to Screen Daily, several women in their 50s were turned away from a screening of Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara’s acclaimed new movie Carol for wearing “rhinestone flats”.

The report goes on to state that men are required to wear bow ties.

The Cannes festival website states only that “black tie/evening dress is required for gala screenings”, but does not specify high heels.

However, its dress code is a regular topic of conversation on festival blogs. One writer recalls a friend being refused entry because he was wearing brown shoes with a tuxedo. And actor Guy Pearce has previously spoken about his confusion over the red carpet dress standards.

Today’s story has sparked outrage on Twitter, with some suggesting that the policy results in a sexist dress code.

Others have come up with creative solutions.

As many observers have pointed out, the controversy is all the more ironic as this year’s festival has seen a concerted effort by organisers to celebrate women working in film.

What do you think? Is a high-heels-only policy reasonable?
