THE CAMPAIGNS OF General Election 2011 are all over now and the programme for new government in place.
If you’re suffering electioneering withdrawal symptoms, we recommend tuning into RTE1 tonight at 9.35pm for The Naked Election. A reminder of how hard fought and hard won GE11 was, the documentary follows six election candidates on the campaign trail. They include Fine Gael’s Leo Varadker, the Greens’ Paul Gogarty and independent Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan.
The producers Loose Horse did a similar doc during the previous general election, following nine candidates that time including Mary O’Rourke, Frank McNamara and Richard Boyd Barrett. Boyd Barrett lost that time but beat Mary Hanafin to a seat in Dun Laoghaire this time to take his place in the 31st Dail for People Before Profit.
Also worth catching if you missed its first broadcast on RTE Radio1 on Saturday is Dogfight: Conor and Charlie. Producer Ciaran Cassidy did an amazing job of catching the anger on the doorsteps as Fianna Fail candidates for Dublin South West Conor Lenihan and Charlie O’Connor made their bid to hold onto their seats. You can now listen back to the whole documentary on the Documentary on One page.
For a taster of the level of vitriol the pair received on the campaign trail, listen to this clip where Conor Lenihan gets what-for from an angry voter (Warning: the language may offend some listeners)>
