TWITTER USER DECMUNRO spotted this ad in Foyles bookshop on the South Bank, London and decided to give it a boost on Twitter.
The note (click to enlarge) is from 34-year-old Andrew Bailey from south-east London who is seeking someone to read to him after he became unable to read 15 years ago due to degenerative disease Friedreich’s ataxia.
According to the BBC that the ad was placed in Foyles and Goldsmiths University by Bailey’s carer. The plea was retweeted over 1,500 times from Dec Munro’s account and Bailey’s carer confirmed that he has since been ‘inundated’ with dozens of offers from locals.
Friedreich’s ataxia affects the nervous system, and Bailey started using a wheelchair at 11 registered and registered as blind five years ago. Bailey is now under 24-hour care and has difficultly hearing and speaking.
He’s delighted with the response though, having said that audiobooks are ‘too robotic’ for him.
It makes me feel very good really. There are nice people out there.
Bailey has about 100 books he would like to read, so will need as many volunteers as possible.
