The 9 TV shows you should be watching this autumn

Here’s what’s coming up in TV Land this season.

A NEW SEASON, a new crop of TV shows to get stuck into.

The heavy-hitters in the US are being very generous with a whole host of gritty dramas, comedies and crime procedurals to enjoy; over on this side of the pond, Nordy drama The Fall returns in November.

Here are our picks of the bunch. Get cracking.

The Leftovers

SerienTrailerMP / YouTube

What it’s about: An unexplained event in which two per cent of the world’s population disappear overnight. The ‘Sudden Departure’ takes people apparently at random, and the show tracks those who are left behind as they try to make sense of things.

Why you should watch it: If you need something dark and slightly supernatural to fill the gap until True Detective Season 2, this should do the trick.

Gotham

What it’s about: Batman. Well, sort of – it’s a prequel based on Commissioner Gordon’s early days on the Gotham Police force. A lot of familiar characters will have their origin stories told, including Bruce Wayne, Penguin, Catwoman and the Joker.

Why you should watch it: It’s a fresh take on a well-loved story. The pilot received good reviews on its premiere in the US and it can only get better are more familiar faces are introduced.

Scorpion

What it’s about: Scorpion is based on the life of Irish computer genius Walter O’Brien, who was recruited by US Homeland Security to defend the country against high-tech threats.

Why you should watch it: A fun crime procedural is always welcome, and the ratings for the first episode were promising. Hollywood Reporter describes O’Brien and his band of misfits as the dramatic version of the Big Bang Theory.

Gracepoint (from October 2)

What it’s about: Gracepoint is the American remake of UK detective drama Broadchurch, concerning the death of a boy in a rural village. David Tennant will repeat his role as Emmett Carver, with Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad) joining as his partner Ellie Miller.

Why you should watch it: The original UK show was thoroughly gripping – it’ll be interesting to see how the US version holds up.

Bad Judge (from October 2)

What it’s about: Grey’s Anatomy alum Kate Walsh plays a hard-living woman who also happens to be a Criminal Court judge. Oh yeah.

Why you should watch it: It’s produced by Will Ferrell, who generally knows about comedy. Plus the premise is MAD.

How To Get Away With Murder

QuickFirePromos / YouTube

What it’s about: Legal drama with Viola Davis (The Help) starring as a university law professor who becomes entwined in a murder plot along with her students.

Why you should watch it: Written by Shonda Rhimes (the woman who brought you Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal) it’s been billed as an edgy thriller with a morally ambiguous heroine. The first episode aired earlier this week.

The Fall (November)

What it’s about: Season two of the fall will pick up where we left off – a Metropolitan Police detective is called in to hunt down a serial killer attacking young, professional women in Belfast.

Why you should watch it: If you loved the first season, you’ll already know. If not, get a box set and enjoy Gillian Anderson’s steely turn as Stella Gibson, and Jamie Dornan (proving why he was perfectly cast as Christian Grey) as the creepy killer Paul Spector.

The Affair (from October 12)

What it’s about: Dominic West (The Wire) and Ruth Wilson (Luther) join forces in this drama about the aftermath of an extra-marital affair.

Why you should watch it: West and Wilson have both got serious acting chops, and if the rising sense of dread from the trailer is anything to go by, it’ll be a gripping watch.

Transparent

Amazon Studios / YouTube

What it’s about: Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development) stars as a middle-aged father who finally decides to come out as transgender to his family and begin living life as a woman.

Why you should watch it: It’s Amazon’s first foray into Netflix-style territory, and it’s being hailed as a moving, bittersweet portrait of a person’s journey to finally find themselves. Watch the first episode for free here.
