You can help save Benjy the gay bull from the slaughterhouse

Benjy’s owner wanted to send him to slaughter for refusing to mate with females – but an animal charity has stepped in to save him.

AN ANIMAL CHARITY is asking the public to donate to save a ‘gay bull’ that’s headed for the slaughterhouse because he’s more interested in bulls than heifers.

Benjy the bull from Co Mayo made headlines earlier this month when it was revealed that his owner was planning to send him to slaughter because he wouldn’t mate with female cows.

People were alternately concerned and incredulous about the news, and the Twitter hashtag #SaveBenjy sprung up in support of the bull’s plight.

The Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN) has decided to step in and together with UK charity TheGayUK, it is hoping to raise £5000 pounds for the initial purchase, transport and care costs of Benjy.

John Carmody of ARAN told DailyEdge.ie that they have found an animal sanctuary in the UK that is ready and waiting to take Benjy in – now all they need is the public’s help.

The two charities have set up a crowdfunding page, where they’re asking people to donate to the cause.

Carmody said he hoped people would have compassion for Benjy:

We need people to step in and make a donation – it’s a compassionate thing to do. If it was a dog or a cat in this situation, our phones would be ringing off the hook. I hope people will give Benjy a second chance.
We’ve got an experienced and well-established sanctuary ready to take him in. They’ll be visiting him on Monday to do the various tests that will ensure he’s ready to travel.

So far, a staggering £2335 (€2937) has been raised to save Benjy – almost half the goal amount. If you want to donate, click here.
