Apps for Apes brings iPads to Orangutans

The pilot programme, run by Orangutan Outreach in Milwaukee Zoo, is helping to keep orangutans from feeling isolated while in captivity.

THE iPAD IS an essential accessory these days – so much so that even orangutans want in.

Thanks to Orangutan Outreach, Orangutans at a Milwaukee Zoo get to experience using iPads for themselves – and they might even be able call their mates on them in the near future.

The pilot programme, called Apps for Apes (A4A), has been deisgned to provide orangutans in captivity the stimulation that their intelligent brains need.

Orangutans can get bored if they have to be isolated for long periods of time, and the iPads allow them to draw, listen to music, and view photos and videos.

The iPads are put up to mesh outside of where the orangutans are kept, and staff members guide the orangutans to play with them.

Orangutan Outreach reports that in time the apes will even be able to interact with each other using the iPads, and use the device to let their carers know what food treats they would like.

For now, they can watch videos of each other on the donated iPads
