Waking up early as a kid and waiting for tv to start!

Having a row over who’s turn it was to get up and change the channel and then watching some crap for ages because nobody would give in.

Won’t need to whack the side of the TV any more…

Flicking on channel 4 at night hoping to see a boobie! Come on guys, we all did it ;)

Ah Janus, I remember analogue TV like it was yesterday.

25 yrs ago We got a second telly in the sitting room, my dad was tuning it in and shouting up and down the hall what’s on 1 and so fourth, channel 4 kept coming in, but my dad was having none of it, rte 1 had to be on button one, network 2 on button 2, took him ages, we didn’t get to look at telly that night because of this…even thought the same programmes were on the telly in the kitchen…we all sat round watching him tune it in and the video channel on AV..happy times.

Remember when I were a lad, TV salesman selling us a black & white telly…. ‘It comes in three colours. Black, white and grey’…..

@ eimear,thanks for the flashback there,the man in the van who sold the videos usually had a special section for the daddies who used to loiter around the van & only approach when all the kids in the estate had been sorted with their selection & left

When the monotone beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep came on at the end of the night. That’s now been replaced by my tinnitus.

We used to get S4C instead of C4 in the summer depending on the atmospherics

I know this doesn’t have anything to do with analogue but the tweets reminded me of ‘the man in the van’ full of BMX videos who used to drive around the housing estates renting the latest blockbusters! There was always a man in a van back then….for coal, logs, slack and clothes that fell off the back of a truck!

“Is that on VHF or UHF?” The channel you’re trying to tune into is always at the end of a very long frequency.

Having to fix the arial on the roof a couple of times so we always had free BBC.

Mum going crazy because someone kept changing it to the ‘wrong’ channel (anything other than rte 1).

Anyway for an Analogue related memory – I used to have to stick a fork or Spoon into the aerial receivers on my old portable tv in the bedroom to get reception.

No more rabbit ears..

Using Quality Street wrappers ie Red & Green putting them over your eyes for the first 3D film broadcast because you couldn’t afford the glasses!

I’ve always thought the above RTE ‘scramble’ image would make a good t-shirt.

1. Getting up really early and starting at the test card/clock waiting for the programmes to start.
2. “Snow in the east!” This was the joke in our house associated with tuning the TV and the black and white fuzz going across the screen. Accompanied by general shouting up to the attic “almost… almost… STOP!”

I had a b&w portable in my bedroom, sometimes I’d put sweet & sour sauce on the screen to make it look like it was colour.

Anyone remember Harlech, the Welch channel? It was always fuzzy!

Sorry for being a spoilsport but most of these memories aren’t anything to do with analog per se. They’re just TV related things that happened in the 80s.
