Here’s how the man who wrote Happy makes people happy

Amir Windom helped Pharrell pen the massive hit. He knows his stuff.

BECAUSE I’M HAPPY… The tune is probably stuck in your head already, right?

Amir Windom is a Grammy Award-winning, Oscar nominated record executive behind artists like fun., Bruno Mars and Kanye West.

Most recently though, he helped Pharrell write a little ditty called Happy. You may have heard of it? It a little bit popular this year.

DailyEdge.ie chatted to Amir about the making of the song and what he does every day to make people happy.

On why he thinks Happy makes people so…happy

Amir acted as the music supervisor on Despicable Me 2, and worked with Pharrell on the original songs for the film.

“We had no idea that [Happy] would touch the world as it has, it’s been amazing,” he says.

We just came up with an idea and people latched on to it, and understood the purpose and the message. We forget to focus on being happy in this stressful world that we live in. It’s great to see the world has taken a small idea and made it a movement.

On Happy becoming a ‘movement’

You may remember the deluge of smile-inducing Happy fan videos, which started taking over the internet back in March.

Amir told us that his mam even made one with the pupils of her school in Atlanta, Georgia.

Amir works with the charity Operation Smile, which provides care and surgery for children born with facial deformities. He says he was most affected by their Happy videos:

These children, after their operations, they dance to Happy. It’s really amazing to see how Happy has created joy in some of the most traumatic situations.

On how he makes people happy in real life

Amir is very passionate about his charity work, which he feels is his real ‘purpose’ in life. On an ordinary day, though, he loves to act the goat:

I’m a very silly guy. I think God knew I’d be working in a stressful industry, so he made me a silly man. My purpose in life is to cause joy – through a laugh, a smile, an act of kindness – so I try to keep my mind on those three things every day.

AW. We’d say he certainly feels like a room without a roof.
