You set that science v religion debate up beautifully James. Doesn’t really seem the best way to frame the debate on gay rights though. Of the 14 countries that allow same sex joint adoption (which I believe the Popes comments were related to) quite a few are predominantly or historically Catholic. Maybe we need to look elsewhere for excuses as to why we haven’t brought in similar legislation here

@ Chuck – the dad mightn’t have had proof positive that his son was gay from 6 years old, not in a “court of law” way, but he definitely would have a strong feeling about it, unless he hadn’t played an active role in his kid’s life ( and the letter suggests the opposite is the case ).

I wasn’t belittling you, I just meant that, IMHO, there are Los of things about bring a parent that you mightn’t understand if you weren’t a parent, but are obvious when you become one. Having kids and being a father isn’t a job or a rational process, there’s lots of emotional and instinctual stuff that you “know”, but not in a way that you can intellectualise. The difference between your baby’s cry and another baby’s cry; you can hear your kid’s worry or unhappiness through 10 feet of concrete.

Again, I’m not slagging you off or saying I’m somehow better than you, I’m thinking more about the difference between how I thought about the parent-child relationship before I was a father, and how becoming a father changed those assumptions completely.

Facile as it is to say, it’s one if those things you have to do to really understand. I
And I say that with complete respect for you as a person.

@ Rena – why not? I fully and utterly believe that a person is born gay. They don’t “become” gay. So even if a child has not become sexually developed, that child, if gay, is already gay. So it’s not I probable that the father could have known “emotionally” ( a gut feeling ), if not “objectively”.

If your perceptive enough about your own kids you’ll know! don’t knock it that a beautiful story! Amazing Dad!

I knew I was gay at 6 if not earlier, I didn’t have the words for it but just knew, I guess just like a straight person knows at that age, it’s obviously not a sexual thing but you know, my partners parents say they knew he was gay at that age or earlier, anyway what a great story and big up to the family in question.

Parents don’t keep looking at their own children and say well he / she is gay that is not how it works its little things building up over the years . Then when the child does tell them they say well I kind of knew . But not something you would be giving great deal of time to but it all comes together when they are told .

Of course you know if your child is gay or not.. even at 6 or earlier.. Great note from papa to son.. ! You can’t beat parental love..
