9/11 in music: Seven tribute songs inspired by 2001 attacks

From Interpol to Slayer, a wide range of artists reacted to the events of 9/11 in their music and lyrics. Here’s a selection of those tributes.

AT LEAST 3,000 people died in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York, the Pentagon in Virginia and a plane which crashed in rural Pennsylvania ten years ago.

The attacks sparked a huge musical response from a wide range of artists from Paul McCartney to D12, and the messages conveyed in those songs include calls to celebrate the city of New York and to fight against terrorism.

Neil Young recounts events on board United Airlines Flight 93, on which passengers attempted to take control of the plane from the hijackers. The plane crashed in Pennsylvania, killing all on board. Bruce Springsteen’s The Rising has been hailed as having a cathartic effect on the grief caused in the attacks, while the Beastie Boys celebrate New York’s diversity in their Open Letter to NYC.

Here are seven songs inspired by the events on September 11, 2001: (Note: the lyrics of some of the following songs contain profanities)

1. Interpol – NYC

2. Bruce Springsteen – The Rising

3. Paul McCartney – Freedom

4. Beastie Boys – An Open Letter to NYC

5. Slayer – Jihad

6. Black Eyed Peas – Where is the Love

7. Neil Young – Let’s Roll
