WE WARNED YOU that here at DailyEdge.ie we’re pretty fickle when it comes to Christmas movies.

We’ve already lauded the accomplishments of Home Alone and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, and now as the number of sleeps til the big day rapidly diminishes, we pull out the big guns.

Here are just 11 of the hundreds of reasons why The Muppets Christmas Carol is the best…

1. Gonzo as Charles Dickens and his sidekick Rizzo the Rat

2. Tiny Tim is so tiny

Kermit is only knee-high to a grasshopper, and Tiny Tim is small enough to sit on his shoulder.

3. Michael Caine as Scrooge

He’s the epitome of humbug as Ebeneezer Scrooge, but melts our hearts when the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future show him the error of his ways.

Hear hear- best Christmas film ever, I always recommend it to anyone who hasn’t seen it. I don’t think the annual penguin’s skating party was in the original novel though!

Yes I concur – best Christmas movie ever – the scene where Scrooge sings as he watches his young self break up with his true love make me weep everytime, most moving acting Michael Caine has done that I’ve seen! And then all the laughter- absolutely brilliant.

For me, reason number eleven sums it up. It just captures the mood, the fun, the joy and pain! Watched it the other night and felt the Christmas spirit for the first time this season. The Muppets and this movie are just what Christmas should be…magical and timeless!

Hands down the best Christmas film. Also I agree with the posters putting Home Alone 1 & 2 up there mext to it. Looking forward to the ensuing marathon of mince pies and these quality films.

Its a wonderful life for me, can remember been blown away by it when i seen it first. Then watching it the following year and the following and the following then in colour, then back to black and white again, recording it, downloading it, downloading it again in colour, uploading it to a place i could steam it back to myself. And best of all its on again tomorrow.

Brilliant! But also watch the 1987 movie A Muppet Family Christmas which features the Muppets, Fraggle Rock AND Sesame Street all in one.

For me it has to be scrooge with albert finney..it’s actually a musicial version but its an incredible adaptation.made in 71 it stars alec guinness as jacob marley.RTE used to show it every christmas eve..i continue the tradition with my own kids now although it is considered by many the ” scarier” of the many examples.

Love it – of all the Christmas Carol adaptions it’s the one closest to the text (thanks to Gonzos narration) – amazing songs and incredible attention to detail. It was the first muppet film after the death of Jim Henson, directed by his son and is an amazing tribute to the man ‘It is the summer of the soul in December’
